Finding balance when using a menu plan
Written bySandy Goldberg on 8/1/2003

A new client came for her first consultation recently and while we were chatting she said I must tell you something about myself - "I am an extremist - it's moderation I find difficult!" Anyone who has ever had a weight problem understands exactly what she means! So how do we find balance?

In my last newsletter I discussed drawing up menu plans. One of the reasons why menu plans are so useful is that they help people who find moderation difficult, keep focused on the quantities they should be eating.

People overeat for a number of reasons - pleasure, comfort, enjoyment, stress, un- happiness etc - what is vital is that if one wants to lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle then you need to find the balance that is right for you when following a menu plan.

Each person is unique as is their lifestyle - it is imperative that menu plan take this into account. In order to find the balance that works for you I have drawn up some questions which you can ask yourself.

  • How fast do I want to lose weight?
  • Would I be happier to lose slightly less every week but add in a few 'extra's"?
  • Do I want to increase the amount of exercise I do every week?
  • How much flexibility do I need?
  • Am I the type of person who needs more control?
  • Am I able to have extras without going overboard?
  • What am I prepared to give up and for how long?
  • What am I not prepared to give up?

Depending on your answers to the above questions, you will be able to judge how much flexibility or rigidity you require when using your menu plan.

Remember though to always be open minded and flexible. Different situations require different solutions. In other words you many find that at times you need flexibility and at other times you need to be more rigid.

There is not one right answer for everyone. Ask yourself the questions and find the balance that is right for you!
